Birds Hill
Park has
38K of classic trails, and the 5K
Group Use Road loop is often groomed for skating. Since 2003-2004 there has
been a new heated building at the stable area that is available for Park
users during regular Park hours -- it has a common area and two
wheelchair-accessible washrooms / change rooms, and there are some vending
machines. Contact info: www.gov.mb.ca/conservation/parks/popular_parks/birds_hill/info.html
at the bottom of the page. Birds Hill Park's office phone number is 222-9151.
South Whiteshell trail (part of the Trans Canada Trail -- 12K, links the town of Falcon
Lake to West Hawk ) -- double tracked classic skiing, and has a little of everything --
demanding uphills, technical downhills, and cruising sections.
West Hawk classic trail network (heads from West Hawk over to
Falcon Ridge Ski Area, and then connects to
the South Whiteshell trail). In total, there is over 40K of
trails.
The classic intermediate 7K trail at Rennie (located at the
Alfred Hole Goose Sanctuary) is an intermediate trail.
It has a warm-up shack and outhouse about 1/2 way, with a lovely view
over Jean Lake. The scenery and variety of terrain
are awesome -- up rocky hills & down into marshy areas, with many evergreen trees.
A great beginner-intermediate trail is at Seven Sisters.
The trailhead is just in front of Jennifer's Restaurant on the main road
of the town. The trail was historically 4K long for classic skiing. In
2006 they expanded it, and there are now three loops: a short (3K), a
medium, and a long (7K) option. It is a fairly easy trail, but it has a
variety of terrain and some really fun hills that allow for a long fast
glide. The trail is mostly in the bush, but it passes the Seven Sisters
dam where the Whitemouth River meets the Winnipeg River, so there is
lovely open water to look at. There's also lots of wildlife: white
tailed deer, rabbits, and bald eagles. The groomer is very meticulous,
and quickly re-grooms after a dump of snow or after some snowmobiler has
wrecked the trail.
The classic intermediate 8K trail at Rainbow Falls (located between Jessica Lake & White
Lake) crosses snowmobile trails and highway 307 in several places.
The Pine Point Rapids trail, located between
Betula Lake and Nutimik Lake, is a scenic 6.5K intermediate trail. It
has a couple of intermediate hills on the way to the nice new warm-up
cabin at the open water of the Whiteshell River. There is also an
optional short hike up to a peak that overlooks the area. The
surrounding forest has an astounding number of fallen trees from the
windstorms that have plagued Manitoba the last few years.
There is a 7K intermediate trail at Otter Falls.
The trail is pretty, with big trees. This trail has only one or two
intermediate hills on the return from a well equipped warm-up cabin that
is shared with snowmobilers.
Many Whiteshell Provincial park trails are not groomed as often as
many other trails in the province.
