Wednesday Night Race Series |
This series of cross country ski races takes place at the
Windsor Park Nordic Centre each Wednesday night
at 7:30 from December to March (snow permitting).
- For 2009-2010, the Wednesday Night Race Series is being organized by Larry Paetkau and the
Red River Nordic Ski Club -- in cooperation with the
Windsor Park Nordic Centre.
- Each race is designated as Free, Classic, Sprint Relay, Double Pursuit, or whatever.
- The Free and Classic races will usually have 10-second interval single starts, although this may be
changed to dual starts or a mass start depending on factors such as weather or number of skiers.
- Event Cancellation Policy
The race organizers may choose to defer the race to
Thursday if the weather is too cold to hold it on the Wednesday.
The decision will be made prior to 4:00 PM on Wednesday. It will be posted in red on our
website homepage and conveyed to the staff at the
Windsor Park Nordic Centre.
- Pre-register online at Zone4
by 4:30 PM on race day.
- Pre-registered
skiers must complete their registration (i.e. pay) on-site by checking-in by 7:00 PM, or their
names will be removed from the start list. Skiers who pre-register and do not show up to race will
lose their pre-registration privilege at future Wednesday Night Races.
- Pre-registered skiers will be seeded and receive the first priority race start times.
Athletes who register on-site will be allocated a first-come first-serve start position after the pre-registered skiers.
- On-site registration opens at 6:00 PM and closes promptly at 6:45 PM. No exceptions!
- The cost is $5 for skiers who belong to any CCSAM-registered club or students who are
participating as part of a school group, and $9 for other skiers.
- Skiers must have a Windsor
Park Nordic Centre trail pass (annual or daily).
- Announcements and questions/answers are at 7:15 in the clubhouse. The race starts at 7:30.

Technique/format schedule
Please see the Events
Schedule
Free
-
Free technique -- any skating or classic
technique can be used. Classic tracks will be available unless snow
conditions are poor.
-
The course distance is ~5K on the Blue Trail, but may be shortened slightly
or modified because of
snow or weather conditions. There will be a ~2.5K course for very young
skiers (Atoms, Pee Wee, and Mini Midgets).
Classic
-
Classic technique -- only classic techniques
are allowed. If you're not sure which techniques are
"classic", ask someone.
-
The course distance is ~5K on the Blue Trail, but may be shortened slightly
or modified because of
snow or weather conditions. There will be a ~2.5K course for very young
skiers (Atoms, Pee Wee, and Mini Midgets).
Sprint Relay
- Teams of 3 (if you attend as an individual, we'll link you up with other
individuals to form a team). Free technique. Mass start.
- The first skier on a team does a lap of ~1K. He/she tags the second skier on the team who skis the same
course, then tags the third skier who skis the course and tags the first skier. This
is repeated three times.
- Everyone from diehard Masters to family groups have a great time at these events,
and it is a lot of fun to watch because the entire race is so close to the clubhouse.
Pursuit (AKA "Duathlon",
AKA "Skiathlon")
- Mass start. One ~5K lap of classic, followed by an immediate transition
to one ~5K lap of free technique (which could be skating or another lap of
classic). Midget to Juvenile
do ~5K -- one lap of classic. Atoms, Pee Wee,
and Mini Midgets do ~2.5K -- one lap of classic. Any skier who wants to do a distance other than the one designated for their age category can do so,
but only their first lap will count for Wednesday Night Race Series
points. <--- new for 2009-2010 (See below).
Schools
- The Schools races are simply designated races for school
teams to come out ski with/against each other and everybody else.
Middle Years and Senior High schools ski the ~5K course while Early Years
schools ski the ~2.5K course.
To learn how Wednesday Night Race Series points are
awarded, see below.
Contact the Windsor
Park Nordic Centre
for information about the next Wednesday Night Race.
If snow conditions or the weather are questionable or poor, the CCSAM website homepage will be updated on Wednesday afternoon before 4:00 with
information that either confirms the race will be held, or announces its
cancellation. You can also contact the Windsor
Park Nordic Centre. Our Event Cancellation Policy
and weather prediction will be used to make the
decision. If a decision to hold the race is followed by an unpredictable
worsening of the weather by race start time, the race could still be
cancelled.
Volunteers are needed to have a successful race series.
Please encourage your friends and family to help
us. No experience is necessary -- just warm clothing! On-the-job
training will be provided to volunteer officials. Contact the Windsor
Park Nordic Centre for more info, or just
approach the race organizers on Wednesday Night.
The
Wednesday Night Race Series awards
will be presented at the CCSAM
Awards Banquet in March. The skier with the most points in each age/gender category will
receive an award. There are 34 age
categories.
- For each race, points are awarded. The skier with the
fastest time receives 100 points. Other skiers receive points based on the fastest
time and their time. The formula is: (fastest time / your time) x 100. For example: if the
fastest time was 10:00, and your time was 20:00, you would receive (10:00 /20:00) x 100 =
50 points.
- Race results will be posted to our website (www.ccski.mb.ca) within a day after the race.
- A skier must finish a minimum of 5 races to be eligible for
a race series standing.
- For the Sprint Relays, a skier's
participation will be added to their total number of races,
but points are not awarded.
- For the Double Pursuits, Junior Boy/Girl
& older skiers who choose to do the shorter course (or Juvenile & younger skiers who choose to do the
longer course)
will have their participation added to their total number of races,
but points will not be awarded.
- For the Atom, Pee Wee, and Mini Midget categories, points
are based on the ~2K course. Kids who opt to ski the 5K course will have their participation added to their total number of races,
but points will not be awarded.
- A skier's race series point total is the sum of their:
- 5 best race points if there are only 5, 6, or 7 races in the
series, or
- 6 best race points if there are 8 or 9 races in the series,
or
- 7 best race points if there are 10 or 11 races in the
series, or
- 8 best race points if there are 12 or 13 races in the
series.
