High Performance Team for the 2010 Canadian Championships by Karin McSherry, Executive Director (posted on February 23)
The High Performance Committee is pleased to announce the High Performance team that has been selected to represent Manitoba at the 2010 Hayward Ski Nationals in Whitehorse, March 14 to 21.
Athletes Jordan Baird Samantha Burkart Sean Carter Erik Charabin Alex Druwe Nicole Dubois (declined position) Jennie Hissa Leah Kirchmann (declined position) Manon Magnan Amie Mathews (declined position) Coaches Nadene McBride Corey Kolbuck These athletes are just 10 of 30 High Performance Program athletes currently training and racing for Manitoba. The High Performance Committee recognizes the hard work and dedication of all our athletes and has selected these individuals as the ten best Manitoban skiers who are the most prepared to compete against the best in Canada.
Best of luck to all team members as they prepare for the most important week of their competition season.
Check our website's High Performance page in mid March for updates from the competition and our athletes' race results.
Go Toba!
High Performance Program update by Karin McSherry, Executive Director (posted on December 14)
I hope you are all asking Santa for snow this year...and an early Christmas present! While Santa's working on that request I hope you continue to find interesting ways to train in this wait-and-see period.

(If your name is missing, you need to contact Karin in the CCSAM office.)
Selection Team vs Traveling TeamBack in the spring of this year, an email was sent to all 2008-2009 High Performance Program athletes that explained how a "Selection Team" and a "Traveling Team" were going to be selected and announced in Apr 2009 & Feb 2010 respectively. The Selection Team was to consist of athletes who would potentially compete in a pre-Nationals event (e.g. Western Canadian Championships) and the Traveling Team was to consist of athletes selected to compete at the National Championships.
However, soon after that email was sent we learned that our sport will suffer a major annual funding reduction until at least 2014. This, and the fact that the 2010 Westerns are being hosted locally, resulted in the High Performance Committee (HPC) deciding to support just one major race team trip in 2010. This trip is the Canadian Championships (Whitehorse, March 14th to 21st). Therefore, only one team will be selected by the HPC in the 2009-2010 season. (For the 2010-2011 season and beyond, the HPC is considering a shift toward funding more athletes at pre-Nationals events and fewer athletes at Nationals trips.)
Team Selection & Team Trips is further explained in Section 2 of the High Performance Program manual. It can be viewed & downloaded from near the top of this page, or you can send a request to Karin in the CCSAM office to send you a hard copy.
2010 Manitoba Winter Games and 2011 Canada Winter Games
The Manitoba Games and the Canada Games happen every 4 years.
The 2010 Manitoba Games is open to athletes born from 1994 to 1999. If you would like to compete for a spot on your regional team, please see our Events Schedule or our 2010 Manitoba Games page.
The 2011 Canada Games are for athletes born from 1988 to 1995. In December 2010 the HPC will be selecting a team of 5 female and 5 male athletes (plus 2 alternates) to compete for Manitoba at the 2011 Games. If you are interested in competing for a spot on the cross country ski team, you will need to read our 2011 Canada Winter Games Selection policy (PDF).
2010 Western Canadian Championships / Canada Cup and Manitoba Provincial Championships
The Whiteshell CC Ski Club is hosting this Triple Event on February 12th to 14th in Pinawa (co-hosted with Red River Nordic). It's Manitoba's turn to host the Westerns, and we've decided to combine it with our Provincial Championships so that everyone can come out and meet / ski with the best in Western Canada! This is an important weekend of racing as the 2010 Provincials are a selection event for both the 2010 Nationals team trip and the 2011 Canada Winter Games team.
Keep training smart...the snow is coming!!

CCSAM is instituting some changes in the High Performance Program. In particular, we have appointed a new HP Chairperson, Sandra Kirby, and will be introducing new criteria for the HP program.
We are moving towards creating a true high performance program and will be reviewing the criteria and composition of the scorecard.
To make sure that we have your input into this process, we will be holding a High Performance Program meeting, open to all interested parties, to discuss all positive changes to this program.
The meeting will be held on Saturday May 10th at 10:00 AM at the University of Winnipeg.
Please confirm your attendance by contacting CCSAM Executive Director Karin McSherry. Details on the exact meeting room location and where to park will be given at that time.

"Tuesday's classic race was strange; the wax was fine for most. In hindsight, we thought a warmer one would have suited Leah better. We ended up using Swx VR55 for the boys, and it worked initially. It also worked for me after all the races were over, however some folks felt at times it was slippy. The gods were not with us that day. Every team that Nadene and I spoke to after the race used something different; there was no consistency amongst the teams of what they used."

Rob writes:
"We had a much better day today. We got the glide wax right-on: IR Spectra -2C to +10C -- fast, fast, fast. It was tested against two other combinations.
Ian, Leah, and Kieran were very pleased with their results!
Paul fell a number of times, and that certainly effected his performance.
Murray felt he had nothing in the tank shortly after starting his race, and he had a nasty fall on a downhill which didn't help.
Lindsay is experiencing the tough field, but she is a trooper and is hanging in there.
We are all heading out to the Hoito restaurant shortly to see if we can get in. It's Ian's favourite spot for Finish pancakes. We'll then review the videos taken during the past two days by my father."

Rob writes:
"Today was a good day for Leah, Kieran, and Paul, as they all went on to qualify for the Sprint heats.
Leah unfortunately, due to an officiating error, (the officials admitted the error), did not start her in her proper semi-final heat, so she was placed in a disadvantaged situation and thus lost the opportunity to progress in the standings -- very frustrating.
Kieran came in third in his quarter final heat, and Paul came in fourth in his quarter final heat. Only the top two advanced. The competition is very stiff, but the boys looked strong.
Ian just missed qualifying by coming in at 33rd. The top 30 from the time trial advanced to the heats.
Alex, Lindsay and Murray missed progressing into the heats.
We ski at Lappe on Saturday, and then race on Sunday -- classic technique."

Rob & Gina Kirchmann's post-event report:
As you may be aware, upon the arrival of the Manitoba Team in Edmonton, the Western Canadian Championships were cancelled due to cold weather. While Karin McSherry worked on getting everyone back home, I investigated other weekend race options. After getting an enthusiastic "I still want to race" response from the athletes, permission for late entry into the Thunder Bay Canada Cup race was pursued and obtained. Karin was able to make arrangements with WestJet to have the athletes return on an early flight on Friday.
As Ihor was not feeling well, Al Siemens volunteered to accompany me and the athletes on this trip. Al was great to have as a second driver, a coach with race event experience and as a knowledgeable waxing technician. His skills were greatly appreciated; I learned a lot. Together Al and I were able to offer the athletes an organized wax room, team meetings, encouragement on the course, race support, and post event discussions.
On race day we appreciated the additional support from Jurgen Kirchmann, who made sure the athletes were at the start area on time and the many photos he took of the event.
Michelle Zubrak was also on hand and even though she didn't race due to surgery, she was a volunteer at the race and she cheered on our athletes. Every time one of our athletes skied by her, she would yell, "Do it for the Prairies!"
Leah: Classic 3.5 km 3/7, Pursuit 3.75 km 2/7, 2/7 overall
Ian: Classic 5 km 18/23, Pursuit 7.5 km 11/23, 15/23 overall
Paul: Classic 5 km 22/23, Pursuit 7.5 km 22/23, 22/23 overall
Alexandra: Classic 5 km 4/4, Pursuit 10 km 4/4, 4/4 overallI believe this high caliber race experience was valuable. They have all come back to Manitoba ready to train harder and improve. Ian and Paul now have an appreciation for the challenges of a hilly course. They may be requesting a taller and longer man-made hill be constructed at Windsor Park for training purposes.
